A BRIEF HISTORY OF AASCA
1985 - Student leaders and their advisors from Edmonton
and area attended the first National Student Leadership Conference
in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. They were impressed and invigorated.
1986 - Sherwood Park, Alberta hosted the second
National Student Leadership Conference.
1987 - Student leaders and their advisors attended
the third National Student Leadership Conference in London,
Ontario. Upon their return they began to discuss a Provincial
association that would provide an opportunity for student
leaders in Alberta to meet and share ideas.
1988 - Student leaders and their advisors attended
the Alberta/Saskatchewan Student Leadership Conference in
Lloydminister, Saskatchewan. The group of advisors who attended
decided that the following year Alberta would host a Provincial
Student Leadership Conference.
1989 - The Alberta Association of Student Council
Advisors (AASCA) became a reality. The core group was from
the greater Edmonton area so the first conference was held
in the spring of incoming council members. The University
of Alberta was the site with about 350 delegates attending.
1990 - The second annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was again held at the University of Alberta and
the AASCA executive actively went about finding another site
in Alberta to host the next conference.
1991 - The third annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Red Deer co-hosted by Lindsay Thurber
and Camille La Rouge High Schools.
1992 - The fourth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Medicine Hat hosted by McCoy High
and was held at the Medicine Hat Community College.
1993 - The fifth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference returned to Edmonton co-hosted by W.P. Wagner,
Jasper Place, Harry Ainlay, M.E. Lazerte and J. Percy Page
High Schools.
1994 - The sixth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Sherwood Park co-hosted by Archbishop
Jordan, Ardrossan, Bev Facey, Fort Saskatchewan and Salisbury
High Schools.
1995 - The seventh annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Slave Lake co-hosted by Kinuso, Mistassiny,
Roland Michener and St. Mary of the Lake High Schools.
1996 - The eighth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Calgary. A.A.S.C.A. Reps set up information
booths at Teachers' Conventions.
1997 - The ninth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference was held in Wainwright, hosted by Buffalo Trail
Regional Division #28 and East Central Alberta Catholic Separate
Schools Regional Division #16.
1998 - The tenth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference is to be held in Medicine Hat, hosted by Medicine
Hat High School. A.A.S.C.A sets up a website, representatives
make presentations at eight Teacher's Conventions throughout
Alberta (excluding Mighty Peace).
1999 - The eleventh annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference is to be held in Fort McMurray May 30, 31, and
June 1. A.A.S.C.A sets up their website at AASCA.ORG, representatives
make presentations at three Teacher's Conventions throughout
Alberta including Mighty Peace.
2000 - The twelfth annual Provincial Student Leadership
Conference is to be held in Edmonton May 28 - 30. A.A.S.C.A
sets up a leadership resource network through Alberta's Regional
Learning Resource Centers to provide materials for advisors
and students. A total of 13 different resources are placed
in 12 centers throughout the province.
2001 - 2001 A LEADERSHIP ODYSSEY was the theme for
our thirteenth annual Provincial Student Leadership Conference
is to be held in Pincher Creek and was highlighted with a
performance by country music's Adam Gregory. Our first annual
Junior High Conference - BLAST OFF TO LEADERSHIP - was held
in October at Wainwright High School. Both conferences provided
tremendous opportunity for schools to kickstart leadership
programs with their school communities.
2002 - This year began with the marriage of AASCA
and our Junior High friends (SCALAA). AASCA now potentially
represents 1300 schools throughout Alberta. We hosted our
second annual Junior High Student Leadership Conference on
October 4 & 5 at Sherwood Community School in Calgary.
This conference was attended by approximately 250 delegates
and was a resounding success. With the cancellation of our
Senior High Student Leadership Conference in May due to the
provincial teachers' dispute, we are looking forward to an
extremely successful year in 2003.
2003 - As AASCA's outgoing president put it so aptly
at the Senior High Conference this year, "IT'S GREAT TO BE
BACK !". AASCA tore out of the gate with great leadership
initiatives for Alberta leaders in 2003. In May, Sherwood
Park and Fort Saskatchewan hosted our 14th Senior High Student
Leadership Conference at Archbishop Jordan High School --
DREAM BIG DREAMS. Our Junior program showed us who
the real stars were in October with our 3rd Junior High Conference
at Central Middle School in Red Deer -- ALLSTARS.
2004 - AASCA's growth continues in
2004 with awesome conferences ! This year's Senior
High Conference was hosted by Northern Gateway School Division
and held at Hilltop High School in Whitecourt. It was
an amazing conference and continued AASCA's tradition of
presenting powerful experiences that challenge student leaders
to make a positive difference in their schools and their
communities. The Junior High Conference was held this
past October in Namao at Lancaster Park School. All
reports are that it was also a great time !
